The Czech junior women’s eight won gold medals at the two previous World Championships. The coach of the crew – Iva Uhlová - played an essential part in its success. It was the main reason why the head coach of the junior national team, Vít Kučera, brought her into the junior team again to coach the eight even though she is now coaching the Under 23 women’s team in the newly established Women’s Rowing Centre. The junior women’s eight kept up their golden tradition in spring when they won the European title. The European Championships were also very successful for other Czech crews too. We caught up with both coaches at the final training camp of the season for the national junior team.

At the age of sixteen he represented the United States at the World Championships in Rotterdam. He brought home to Sarasota, where he lives, the bronze medal from the quadruple sculls race. In the first year as a junior he became the world champion! Clark Dean – American sculler: 6´4“ of height and 205 lbs of weight. He achieved 5:54,1 „erg score“ this year. Clark will probably compete in more disciplines at this years´s Worlds in Račice – likewise last year, when he reinforced American coxed four.

Right at the start of the World Cup the pair stroked by Jakub Podrazil surprised the World rowing elite by winning second place – behind the brothers Sinkovic. In Linz they had been defeated by the brothers but here after two rounds Podrazil and Helešic shared the leading position in the serial of World Cup with this extraordinary pair. Their coach Milan Doleček stated: “Not just the result pleased me, but especially how the race went. I had been hearing from many sides the criticism that Jakub is not a real stroke. And that Doleček can train only Synek.”

S blížícím se juniorkým mistrovstvím světa v Račicích přinášíme rozhovory s výraznými osobnostmi českého veslování, které se zapsaly do historie našeho sportu už v juniorském věku. Jednou z nich je Dušan Vičík, kterého jsme navštívili v loděnici pražského Blesku, kde v posledních letech působí v roli trenéra. Dušan Vičík vybojoval v roce 1978 titul juniorského mistra světa – společně s Janem Kabrhelem na dvojce bez kormidelníka. Připravoval je tehdy Lubomír Zapletal a Dušanův táta Zdeněk – trenérská legenda z Olomouce, která vychovala i další mistry světa a medailisty juniorských šampionátů.
